Begin above the valley
Start in the old town, where paved lanes climb towards the walls and the landscape opens across vineyards and the Motovun Forest. Walk without a long checklist: the entrance gate, loggia and main square give the town a natural sequence.
Allow time to pause at the viewpoints and see how the countryside shapes the place. An overnight stay gives you a morning and an evening here, with room for a proper meal between walks through the stone streets.
Follow the white-truffle season
The Istrian white truffle ripens in autumn, and the Mirna Valley and Motovun Forest are among its natural habitats. October is the period particularly highlighted by the Istria Tourist Board. A booked outing with a local provider reveals the skill involved.
At the table, ask what fresh truffle is available and how the kitchen serves it. Pasta such as fuži or pljukanci offers a direct introduction. Keep the experience connected to the season, the producer and the ingredients actually available.
Make room for the countryside
Arrange a cellar visit to explore Istrian wine, with Teran as a natural starting point for a conversation about the region. Leave the rest of the day open enough for lunch and a short walk with vineyard views.
For a longer stay, add one nearby hilltop town such as Oprtalj or Završje. The pleasure is in noticing their different streets and outlooks. Motovun works beautifully as the centre of a small, carefully paced inland journey.
Give yourself time for…
- The town walls and Mirna Valley views
- A prebooked white-truffle experience
- Teran and an unhurried Istrian lunch
Plan it thoughtfully
Arrange truffle outings and cellar visits in advance. Harvest conditions and fresh menus vary, and Motovun's steep stone streets call for comfortable footwear.
